Design your defence
Castles are deliberately designed for strength, that's obvious. But what shapes are strongest and what other factors must be considered? Learn a little more about building and design by looking at the design history of castles.
There is not much information about this on the internet, but every castle was designed a purpose. Use this powerpoint as your guide, but research different castles around the world and consider the key questions below.
Research the shape of loop holes and describe how they relate to blind spots. Can you shoot an arrow vertically down?
What are the advantages of Vauban's forts? In what way is a Koch Snowflake similar to Vauban's fort
Use logo to draw the shape of the fortress. This requires you learn a tiny bit about computer programming. REPEAT 180 [ FD 1 RT 2 ]
Make a plan and elevation drawing for a castle design of your own. Make this a scale drawing and explain the strengths and weaknesses of your castle including references to the geometrical shapes and angles you have measured or worked out.
Consider the shape an arrow makes when you fire it from a castle. What angle should you shoot at to fire the furthest? Can you create an experiment that replicates this? You could use this app (Video Physics) to record some data and analyse the motion. This is hard but it's worth investigating.
